Conversation- The Making Of…

November 12, 2014 § Leave a comment

During the my first brief this year I created a making of video and documented the development of my idea and I found that I really liked the process behind the scenes as much as the finished result.

For my conversation brief this year I decided to base my conversation on how women are viewed by society for how we dress and the injustice of it based on an article I read about a 13 year old girl who in a court case, after it became known she had slept with a 41 year old man, she was called “sexually predatory.” I decided to focus on how words affect can us, especially when we are you and how we wear them though life, like a tattoo in our skin or like scars, I wanted to express how we where them as invisible armour. However I also wanted to show that they are only skin deep and we should all try to not let words hurt us. We are more than the labels we are given by society.
This was the first photo shoot I did out of three and for this I had decided to become project manager, set designer, set director, model director, photographer and typographer. It was a lot to organise and to accomplish in roughly the last 2 weeks of my 5 week long project, because after the research was finished there wasn’t much time left to organise my final outcomes. I had to book a space, make sure I had all of the equipment and tools that i would need, set up my own lighting studio, organise and photograph the models as well as write the typography all over them. Luckily I had help when writing the type on them from one of my models, who is also a graphic designer that specialises in typography, help me out during the day however I had to write all over him myself and it is extremely time consuming and took over an hour.
although it was a lot of work to take on I thoroughly enjoyed it and I wanted rot attempt to try other skills and prove to myself that I can do all of these things, but even if the project didn’t work as I expected that I least I tried. It was also beneficial in developing my skills and something that i could work on throughout the year with other projects.

A conversation- Final Outcomes- Videos

These are the links to my final videos and the animation that I created as outcomes for my conversation brief –>

words hurt –>

(Vimeo description bellow)

For this video I made an attempt at layering images that I took in sequence where, allowing the words to appear. I wanted to express how words appear over time as we get older and how they just build and build and how we never forget, I also wanted to show that we can build up a defence against this with words that make us feel good about ourselves.

Under Your Skin –>

(Vimeo description bellow)

For this video I created the same effect as the first, with the words appearing however for this video I projected the words so that it showed what we don’t see, what is almost under the skin. It’s about how words hurt even if you don’t see it.

For my conversation brief this year I decided to ‘branch’ out and create an animation that could relate to my work. The concept behind this animation was to show how words can hurt, and although they can start off as innocent they can soon grow until you have no control over the effects it will have. Its fairly simple but I also think that it is very effective. This was just one of my rough drafts but I think that simplicity of it is really effective.

A Conversation- Primary Research

I first looked into mind mapping my ideas, just to get a general view of what I was thinking and where my thought process was going. I ended up branching out into many different side topics such as the way language is used and also bullying and I developed a start point for my research. This topic is something I feel very strongly about and the more I research into it the more I think of new ways of visually expressing where I want my project to go.

Roots- Chris Margerison

For the very first brief that we were given I was looking of some inspiration of where to take my project next when we were given a lecture that included this collaberated animation by Chris Margerison and Jamie Hamilton—>

I found that I really liked everything about this video- I thought that the song was catchy and that I really liked the design style and how simple yet effective it was and how they both woke well together. And although at first I put it out of my mind as merely something interesting while I tried to get back into the flow of work, however while I was still distracted I decided to re-visit the video and found that the tree stuck with me and it inspired the thoughts of how trees grow and the significance that can have in other situations. I was drawn to idea that sometime we say things we don’t mean or when we don’t realise there affect, just the roots of a reaction to something or someone that we can often try to belittle or put down, sometimes without conscious thought and often though the words can start small they can often grow and evolve into things not previously anticipated or unthought of at the time and can almost take on a life of there own. Much like trees, which start small but overtime grow and become something more than just roots.

This lead me to attempting an animation/motion graphics, whig is something that I have never tried before. and it turned out that I really liked it, even thug the year before I hated everything to do with after effects, learning it off my own back and doing something for me really opened up my eyes to how much I really like the software. I found that I really liked after effects and plan to use it a lot more in the future and for my practice if I can.

Whilst looking another video that also influenced this project for me was The Hunter (theatrical Instillation) by Davy and Kristin McGuire, I found that this was also something that reinforced my idea about animating the my tree of words. Although this is also seemingly unrelated to my practice i found it beautiful and I really wanted to test the idea of animating a tree.

A Conversation- how society views women…

This is the example of artists that I looked at and the work I produced for my conversation brief. I had complications with my work two days before my first assessment and I had to recreate my whole research document so my questionnaires and cue cards are missing but here is what I produced.

My Article- A Conversation

October 10, 2014 § Leave a comment

The article that I chose to talk about was from The Guardian and it was about change.org. I recorded a conversation with a friend of mine, where we discussed this topic for roughly 3-4 minutes. During this conversation he mentioned how he had signed a potation, which was about a sexual harassment case between a 41 year old man and a 13 year old girl. In the article the man was given a suspended jail sentence and the girl was labelled ‘sexually predatory’ and I wanted to focus on the injustice of the whole article and what the judge did, but mainly focus my project on the fact that she was labelled even though she was far bellow the age of consent. I now had an idea of where to lead my project and I wanted to focus on labels, I know that if  had been labelled that then it would have been something that I would probably never forget and it would probably follow me through life.
